Parque da Água Branca
On Thursday, our second class of the day was canceled, so my classmates and I decided to explore Parque da Água Branca which is about a 20-minute walk from our apartment. We were hoping to see the marmosets that have been spotted there on several occasions, but we unfortunately had no luck. However, we still spent time watching the chickens and ducks they keep there, as well as the carp in a few ponds throughout the park. We walked around for a few hours before going home.
Housing Occupation Tour
For the Social Justice and Inequality in 21st Century Brazil course, we toured a housing occupation near the center of the city. Throughout our time there we were told about the mobilization of individuals and social justice organization tactics that were used.
Museu do Ipiranga
In our Contemporary Issues in Brazil class, we visited the Museu do Ipiranga. The museum and its contents were curated by some of the larger coffee barons in the country along with the government.
Our time there was centered around discussing the legacies of prominent figures in Brazilian history. We investigated the stories of those who have been celebrated despite the atrocities they committed. Additionally, we discussed how historical narratives have often overlooked or misrepresented marginalized groups. This was displayed overtly by the continuous visual errors in the painting of indigenous and black individuals.
A Trip to Bertioga
Our apartment, along with other participants in our program, woke up around 5:00 a.m. to board a bus to Bertioga. We had planned a full day at the beach. Despite the day being somewhat chilly with temperatures around 75 degrees, the sun eventually appeared, making for a beautiful day.
