Why CET Virtual Intensive Language and Culture?
Make the most of a summer at home by leveling up your critical language skills and building a strong foundation for continued language learning. In just eight weeks, you make significant strides in your Modern Standard Arabic and Jordanian Dialect with CET Jordan’s beloved language instructors.
You combine one Modern Standard Arabic course and one Jordanian Dialect course for a total of 9 recommended credits.
You are placed into one of these 6-credit courses:
Intensive and Interactive
Take your language learning beyond an app on your phone. Connect in live, online classrooms with passionate teachers in Jordan and a couple of like-minded peers to study both language and culture. Your classes maintain an intensive pace while your curriculum is rich with cultural content about Jordan and the Arab world. Not only will you make tremendous strides in your Arabic, you’ll also learn how best to study—setting you up for continued language learning success in the long run.
Why an OPI Score?
With an official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) score, you have written proof of your Arabic skills for your résumé or a grad school application… or simply to display proudly on your fridge. At the end of your term, you and a certified ACTFL tester engage in a one-on-one, interactive interview to assess your language level.
Your language classes are online and synchronous—meaning you’re interacting with your instructor and classmates live between Amman, Jordan and the US for nine hours a week. Ask and answer questions in real time, connect with a native Arabic speaker for three conversation hours each week, and attend one-on-one office hours with your instructors online. And as is the CET Jordan way, you participate in an in-class language pledge—that means no English during classes or conversation hours, just virtual immersion.
Bringing the Culture to You
The state of the world might have you staying home for the greater good, but that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on cultural learning. Your classes include activities that help you connect with your host culture and engage with the locals in Amman, Jordan. You might interview a Jordanian on family structure or women’s rights, debate current issues with locals and other CET students, or attend guest lectures from contemporary authors or professionals working to resettle refugees.
A Day in the Life
Following the Jordanian work week, you have classes and meetings from Sunday through Thursday within the window of 10 am-5 pm EST. Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays begin with your Modern Standard Arabic class (2 hrs), followed by a small break and then your Jordanian dialect class (1 hr). Each Monday, you and your peers participate in a virtual ‘out-of-class’ activity. You and your academic partner meet three times each week for a one-on-one conversation hour. Additionally, you have two 30-minute, one-on-one office hours with an instructor to check in on your language progress each week. As is standard for intensive language learning, you can expect one hour of independent homework for each class hour.
Intern Abroad, Virtually
With much of the world working from home in times of social distancing, you also have the option to virtually intern abroad. Gain unique insight to how organizations in Jordan are adapting to ‘the new normal’ and connect with local professionals in Amman—all while building your résumé with practical experience and testing your language skills in a work environment.
