MENUMENU

CET Japan
Summer

Small Program, Big City

You’ll have the best of both worlds—a fully staffed program with few students on a cozy campus, and a bustling metropolis only a 15-minute train ride away. Get the individual attention you need during your language classes, and then enjoy all there is to do outside of class. Shinto shrines, public baths, a jazz festival in Ryokuchi Park, great shopping and regional delicacies…what do you most look forward to doing in Osaka?

Total Japanese Immersion

You’ll take intensive language classes, live with a local roommate, and uphold a full-time language pledge, too. Every day, you’ll be out in the community, practicing what you’ve learned. Try your hand at preparing an Osaka specialty like okonomiyaki (savory pancakes).  Interview a local shopkeeper, and present your findings to the community at the poster fair. The result? You’ll study a year’s worth of Japanese in one very productive summer.

Local Roommates

Living with a local roommate is about more than just sharing a room. Local roommates—recruited from our host university and eager to introduce you to the best of Osaka—can show you where to get the best noodles, how to decipher a train map, and where to find the bookstore with the widest selection of manga. Choose how to stock your shared kitchen. Explore the temples of Kyoto together. Or join your roommate on a weekend trip home.

Living in Osaka

Take a study break and try new snacks from your neighborhood combini (convenience store). Spend a Sunday hiking Minoh Waterfall.  Strike up a conversation with the owner of your favorite ramen shop. Get a group together for a night of karaoke. You will love Osaka. The best part? People are friendly, kind, and more than happy to let you practice your Japanese.

Osaka Gakuin University

The program is based at Osaka Gakuin University. OGU is near two train lines, and only 15 minutes away from Osaka’s downtown. You’ll have access to OGU’s great library, sports facilities, and beautiful campus.

Housing & Meals

You’ll share a furnished, off-campus living space in a residential neighborhood with local roommates. Apartments are small, but comfortable, and there is almost always one roommate for every one student. For meals, prepare something at home or take your pick of the city’s many cheap eateries.

Curriculum & Syllabi

Are you a CET student from Summer 2018 or prior? Your syllabi can be found here.

Practice in the city and make huge strides in Japanese.

An intensive language program like this is all about lessons that challenge you and assignments that get you out the door and practicing. Taking a trip? Ask someone how to navigate the train system in Japanese.  Did you spot the neighborhood pharmacy? Now ask for the medicine you need. It’s about actively working Japanese practice into your free time—learn to make washi (paper) crafts or Japanese sweets,  and trying out nihon-buyo (a form of traditional Japanese dance). It’s about picking up some Osaka-ben (dialect) from your local roommate. It’s about a 24/7 Japanese language pledge. This program pulls it all together.

Sound intense? It is, but you’ll complete one year of Japanese in just 8 weeks. And when Japanese rolls off your tongue after weeks of struggling with the language pledge or you stay up late talking about your hometown with your roommate entirely in Japanese, you’ll know all of the hard work is well worth it.
