Barrio San Joaquin is just a 10-minute walk from la Universidad del Valle! A communal pool, basketball and soccer courts, Bachata and yoga classes for residents—our residential complex is an ideal location for CET Colombia.

 
La plazoleta Jairo Valera pays homage to Grupo Niche’s (if you look closely at the trumpets they spell Niche!) leader and one of Cali’s most famous Salsa composers. His song, ‘Cali Pachanguero’ has become one of the city’s anthems and each trumpet plays a specific aspect of the song: lyrics, melody, rhythm, and harmony.

 
Cristo Rey happens to be one of the largest Christ statues in the world. Constructed in 1953, 50 years after Colombia’s gruesome civil war ended, it serves as a symbol of peace atop the mountains of Cali.

 
Pictured here are the 7 students that make up CET Colombia Spring 2019 with their trusty Colombian Univalle local, Armando. Representing Florida, New York, Kenya, Maryland, and California, these students represent CET’s inaugural cohort in Colombia.

 
Another one of Cali’s perks? It’s right by the coast, so expect to find some amazing seafood here.

Cadhubev is a student organization fighting for Afro descendant rights. “VISION ASOCIACION CADHUBEV BENKOS VIVE en representación de la misma los socios y socias tienen como visión a partir del año 2011 constituirse como una organización que contribuya a la generación, construcción, gestión y desarrollo de políticas que contribuyan a un mejoramiento de los niveles educativo, cultural, artístico, social, político, étnico e ideológico de [email protected] Afrodescendientes.” Many Afro-Colombians and indigenous groups drew inspiration from prominent African American leaders, such as Malcolm X pictured here.

 
More prominent figures reminding us of the interconnected nature of the African Diaspora. The inaugural student team all identifies as Black and/or Latino and will be studying race and ethnicity in the Colombian context.

 
Greenery and tropical weather are staples of Cali life here. Even entrances to malls can testify to the beauty one can expect to find here en la vida caleña.

 
Asia found petting a cat, many of which can be seen roaming the various parts of Univalle’s campus.

 
Had to include this one for the culture. As a Bronx native you can only imagine how hype I felt to see the borough even out here in Cali, Colombia :]
