CET has been continuously monitoring conditions in Mainland China, and we are pleased to announce that we will resume programming at CET Beijing in Summer 2023.
As announced on February 8 2023, CET has been cautiously optimistic about a return to Mainland China this year. We have carefully considered the local conditions and feel confident that we can meet the academic, experiential, and health and safety standards required to successfully operate programs in China in the summer and fall.
CET Beijing will operate as planned this summer. In the fall, all CET Greater China programs (CET Beijing, CET Harbin, CET Shanghai, and CET Taiwan) will operate as scheduled, pending sufficient enrollment.
Pillars of Program Operation
CET assessed the viability of operating in Mainland China by ensuring we could meet the six pillars of program operation we hold ourselves to around the world.
CET Pillar of Program Operation
What We’re Seeing in Mainland China
Our on-site professional staff are confident that local conditions can support the program and its students.
Our on-site team has been working closely with Capital Normal University to make sure that students can be accommodated on-site. CNU has assured us that local and university regulations will permit normal program operations.
The local medical system remains open and accessible to treat all illnesses or injuries.
Mainland China’s large wave of COVID cases has dissipated and currently both local-level and international-caliber facilities are fully operational without care delays.
The closest US consulate or embassy’s American Citizen Services division is open for (at least) emergency services.
The US Embassy in Beijing is fully staffed, fully open, and can support US citizens (and permanent residents) in all capacities.
Airlines are operating with reliable frequency between the host city and US destinations.
Air travel to East Asia (including mainland China) remains complicated due to Russian airspace being closed to North American carriers. That said, daily flights are available. So, while routes may be longer and more expensive, they are reliably accessible.
Borders are open such that American citizens can reliably leave the host country and return to the US.
Mainland China is now issuing all available categories of visas, including student and visitor. COVID-based travel restrictions have been lifted.
We can still meet the academic/experiential goals of the program while integrating local regulations and restrictions.
Other CET program sites in Harbin and Shanghai will be prepared to operate the programs in similar capacities for the fall term. CET maintained full-time staff at each site in China during the pandemic, so we are prepared to build capacity and host students again in the fall.
