Day Trips Around Shanghai

Head on an urban trekking tour through the winding alleyways of Shanghai’s quickly-disappearing Old City. See how a small business is run. Tour the Confucian temple (and take a moment to browse its second-hand book market). Visit local government offices and a few think tanks. Each term, the program offers different activities that allow you to explore Shanghai and Chinese culture.

And don’t forget the exploring that you can do on your own (or with your local roommate and their friends). Check out the brand new Shanghai Disneyland or head to Yuyintang, one of the oldest underground live music houses in China.

Overnight Trip to the Countryside

Take a breather from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai, and head on a weekend trip to see a new side of China—the rural Yangtze Delta region. Visit smaller towns and learn about the lives of the people who live there. Observe firsthand some of China’s most pressing issues: floating population, urban-rural divide, aging population. Experience the fresh air and hospitality of the Chinese countryside.

Exploring the City

David Zabriski (University of Vermont, Shanghai Fall 2015) was so excited by Shanghai and the CET program, he made a video about it. Watch to learn about Shanghai—its international flair, business scene, its energy, and its possibilities for travel.
