UW in India

50 Years of Trailblazing

UW in India launched in 1961. Why does that matter today? Because longevity means deep roots. Our staff and teachers have guided scores of South Asia scholars, artists, and activists, and the program boasts a vast network of local connections. It’s no wonder that your research culminates in something you’ll be proud of: a paper that can be published, presented, or expanded upon in future academic or professional work.

To a Deeper Understanding

How is the Ganges River both pure and polluted? What is the sociology of bodies burning on its banks? What is the story behind the sari in the marketplace? Our program brings you behind-the-scenes, into weavers’ workshops and musicians’ homes. You’ll have access to what tourists can only hope to observe. There are no easy answers, but local friends—from fellow apprentices, to your host mom, to the program cook—will help you ask the right questions.

Varanasi: A Home for Curious Souls

Intense. Exhilarating. Complex. Far from your typical study abroad destination, Varanasi gets you out of your comfort zone. Whether you thrive on an impromptu conversation at a chai stand, or a solo walk through a labyrinth of neighborhood alleys, you’ll never run out of adventures. And if you want to take an academic deep-dive, we give you the tools you need—the teachers, the mentors, the methods, the exposure. You lead the way from there.

UW-Madison and CET

CET partners with University of Wisconsin-Madison to operate this program. You get the best of both worlds—UW’s longterm presence in India and exceptional academics + CET’s three decades of experience in study abroad. The best part: you don’t have to be a UW student to attend. Students from all schools are welcome to apply through UW and earn UW credit.

Scholarships

$200,000
Need money? CET offers over $200,000 in scholarship awards each year. You can apply for a CET scholarship, or learn about other sources of funding, like Diversity Abroad or the Fund for Education Abroad.
