Explore the rapidly expanding world of entrepreneurship and technology in Hangzhou, a high-tech hub in a huge, dynamic economy. Host of the 2016 G20 Summit and home to companies such as Alibaba and NetEase, Hangzhou is driving China’s increasingly important role as a global leader in e-commerce and innovation. Spend the morning in class and then head into the city with classmates for site visits to cutting edge start-ups and tech giants. There’s also time to explore Hangzhou with friends and practice your Chinese language skills as you explore the spot that Marco Polo called “the finest and most splendid city in the world.”

Conversational Chinese

1 credit/15 hours

Offered at beginning and intermediate levels. Includes supporting vocabulary for success in the core course. Classes incorporate activities outside the classroom to practice language skills.

Introduction to Chinese Economy, Entrepreneurship, and Technology

3 credits/45 hours

This introductory course provides an overview of the roles entrepreneurship and technology play in the rapidly developing Chinese economy. Classroom study is complemented by visits and onsite sessions at locations throughout the city.

This course will cover:

  • Recent history and development of the
    Chinese economy
  • Role of technology in China’s economic
  • Hangzhou as a high-tech center for
    e-commerce, mobile apps, and gaming
  • Entrepreneurship and innovation in Zhejiang,
    China’s richest province

Your Home Base in Hangzhou

Hangzhou, with its beautiful reflected bridges, weeping willows, lotus blooms, and pagodas, is a favorite tourist destination. Take a boat ride on the UNESCO-listed West Lake or hike through the nearby mountains and surrounding tea fields. Check out markets for silk items and fun accessories and taste local delicacies such as sour dumplings, griddle pancakes, and specialty desserts. The city, quickly becoming a model for sustainable practices, features a Low-Carbon Museum and Green Building Museum, as well as ready access to free bike rentals for a trip across the Su Causeway or to check out local art galleries.

Housing & Meals

You’ll share a dorm room, including a bathroom, with one other student. You’ll eat most meals in the university cafeteria and enjoy the lovely campus featuring a small river running through the center. A canal-side path along the campus perimeter is perfect for a walk or jog with friends.


Your classrooms and dorms are centrally located at Zhejiang University of Technology, close to the city center and where CET also partners with Middlebury College to operate the Middlebury School in China. Restaurants, shops, banks, public transportation, and other amenities are all located within walking distance of the main gate.

Out and About

  • Visit a local night market with your CET peers and RAs.
  • Explore the Grand Canal, a site critical to the development of China’s economy.
  • Check out an internet cafe and play video games with local friends.
  • Take a day trip to the Xixi National Wetlands Park.


A Typical Day in Hangzhou

8:00 am: Meet with your cohort and group leader to go over the day’s schedule and themes.

9:00 am: Chinese class! Learn new vocab related to Zhejiang’s economic growth over the last decade.

10:00 am: Learn about the role of video games in China’s tech boom.

1:00 pm: Group lunch and study hall – review your vocab from this morning and put together three questions for your afternoon excursion.

2:00 pm: Meet with a successful tech entrepreneur and hear about his journey to starting his own company. Don’t forget to ask your questions!

4:00 pm: Visit a local teahouse near the UNESCO designated West Lake.

6:30 pm: Group meal of Pian Er Chuan (famous noodles from Hangzhou) in the cafeteria to catch up on the day and look ahead to tomorrow.

8:00 pm: Game night – learn a Chinese game from local students.

Full-Time, Bilingual, On-Site Staff

Zhu Li
Before serving as Director of China Programs, Zhu Li served as Academic Director at CET Beijing for almost 15 years. She has also served as Chinese instructor at Middlebury College, Capital Normal University in Beijing and Hochschule Bremen University in Germany, and has taught all levels and aspects of Chinese language. She has earned certification in the areas of Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) testing, the development of multimedia teaching materials, and the conducting of Oral Proficiency Interviews. The author of numerous publications and the recipient of many teaching awards, Zhu Li brings to the program superior teaching skills and intimate familiarity with CET and the field of Chinese language teaching, and has trained countless Chinese language teachers over the years.

Group Flight

CET arranges an accompanied group flight from Washington, DC for students.  The cost of the group flight is billed separately.

We estimate that you’ll need an additional $1,300 for the group flight plus airfare or other travel costs to the departure city. Students typically spend about $150 on personal expenses, too.

Application Requirements

CET seeks motivated high school students interested in a fun and challenging summer experience. The online admissions process includes submission of an application form including short essays, an official high school transcript, and one letter of recommendation from a teacher. CET advisors are available to help choose the program that will be the best fit for you. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the final deadline of March 31. Students are generally expected to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Apply early to ensure space is available in your first-choice program.

What's Not Included

The program fee does not include round-trip transportation to & from China, items & services of a personal nature, and medical expenses not covered by the insurance provided.

Price Subject to Change

CET reserves the right to increase quoted charges at any time without prior notification, based on increased instruction costs, exchange rate fluctuation or other cost increases beyond CET’s control. This right includes, but is not limited to, surcharging students for additional costs incurred due to under-enrollment in any given course.
