Written by Elizabeth Persons (Vanderbilt University) Student Correspondent CET Florence, Summer 2018 As I sit at home back in the states, I get to look back at all the awesome things I got to experience this summer. In Florence, there are plenty of places to climb to see great views of the city. Here is the Duomo from the Cathedral’s bell tower. There are also plenty of churches around Florence including Santa Maria del Fiore which is the chapel connected to Brunelleschi’s Duomo. One of the views we got to take in, thankfully with our class so we got to skip the cost, was from the bell tower of Palazzo Vecchio. This is one of the views which included Santa Croce where Michelangelo and Galileo are buried. In my final week in Italy, I took a trip down to Pompeii which was (as we all know) destroyed by that volcano of Mount Vesuvius in the background. The mountain used to stand taller but it fell during the explosion. I went to visit one of the many museums in Florence, the Galileo Museo which showcases scientific and mathematical tools from all the way back to the 1400s. They were all kept throughout the years by the Medici family. Here is Galileo’s middle finger and pinky finger off of his right hand as well as one of his teeth (ew). I think the view from the Palazzo Vecchio towers are one of the best in town as you can see the mountain behind the gorgeous structure of the Duomo. Our favorite gelato place in all of Florence is Gelateria dei Neri (the strawberry cheesecake is AMAZING). PS. This is Beyonce’s favorite gelato in Florence too!! There is also a Magnum store right next to the Duomo where you can create your own Magnum ice cream bar. Basically, you start with either a chocolate or vanilla ice cream bar and then can dip it in the chocolate covering of your choosing and pick your toppings. Then you watch it all come together and it is truly magical. On our last day of finals, Laura and Anna coordinated a farewell aperitivo with all our teachers from this semester. These deserts were definitely the icing to top off a great six weeks. On our last night in Florence, we took a trip up to Palazzo Michelangelo to watch the sunset. This idea was popular with all the tourists in Florence so the piazza was crazy busy. This view really brought around the whole summer experience for me. If you ever make it to Florence make sure you get some awesome pictures and memories to last a life time. Ciao Firenze, arrivederci!
