We understand! Most CET staff speak at least one other language proficiently and can empathize about how challenging it is to immerse in a foreign tongue. We’ve been there. But let us share these words of wisdom about the language pledge: it’s 100% worth it.
You can prepare yourself for a language pledge by understanding that the hardest part will be in the first few weeks of the program. There’s no getting around that. But if you hang in there and respect the pledge, after a while, you’ll find that adhering to it doesn’t feel as daunting. The language you are studying will start to come more easily. And there’s nothing like that first moment when a sentence comes out of your mouth without your thinking about it.
You can also take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. You’ll be right next to other CET students who are experiencing the same challenge. You’ll be with staff who have been there. And you’ll have your roommate, language partner or your host family to support you, too.
You can do this. And when you walk away from the semester with great language skills, you will be so glad that you did.
