"Untitled: Xie Donghai" - Xie Donghai, 59, has cut steel in Xiejiaqiao for five years. Despite hazardous working conditions, he's grateful for the steady income.

"Rowing with Gustav" - I took this photo when I was able to row with Gustav, a World War II veteran currently living in HaGibor, a Jewish home for the elderly in Prague. My friends and I were so impressed with his knowledge of Czech history, enthusiasm for life, and excellent rowing skills! In this shot, Gustav and I are getting to know each other while he teaches me how to row. I love the Prague architecture in the background. A perfect end to a semester abroad!
3rd Place: Katherine Hayes (American University, Fall 2011 CET Intensive Arabic Language & Culture Studies in Jordan)
"Into the Red Desert" - This photo was taken in Wadi Rum when several CET students and I did a three-day camel trek over our fall break. The photo depicts one of our young Bedouin guides staring off into the spectacular desert sunset. Our guides were both surprised and excited that we could easily converse with them in Arabic; and as a result we were able to talk about the differences between the Bedouin lifestyle and out American culture.

"Zima" - In Prague, I lived two blocks from Wenceslas Square, pictured here. On lucky days, I'd witness a scene like this on the way to class.
2nd Place: Colleen O’Connor (University of Pittsburgh, Fall 2010 CET/C.V. Starr Middlebury program in Kunming)
"Yuanyang Rice Terraces at Sunrise - Southern Yunnan Province, China" - My CET resident director led a weekend excursion to southern Yunnan Province. Our last destination was the beautiful Hani minority rice terraces of Yuanyang, China. For most of the trip, there was a thick fog that covered the mountains, hiding the scenic views of the rice patties. On the last day, we decided as a group to wake up early to watch the sunrise. We crossed our fingers, hoping that there would not be any fog...and we arrived to the most spectacular sunrise I have ever seen. I will never forget this experience. Thank you CET!

2nd Place: Suchada Sutasirisap (University of Texas – Austin, Fall 2010 CET Chinese Studies & Internship in Shanghai)
"Zao An Beijing (Good Morning Beijing)" - Breakfast stand workers sell breakfast at the stand near the Tian An Men square (Gate of Heavenly Peace), Beijing. My CET classmate and one of the Chinese roommates stopped by to grab some freshly made soy milk while we were on our way to the Tian An Men.

"Untitled: Wang Lei" - Wang Lei, 28, has been in the tattoo industry for 10 years. He says as a younger generation comes of age, the social acceptance of tattoos will grow.
