January Term Intensive Chinese Language in Beijing Four-Week Intensive Program for Intermediate and Advanced Learners
Since 1992, CET has operated the four-week January Term for intermediate and advanced students at the campus of the Intensive Chinese Language in Beijing program. The curriculum, designed for students who have studied at least three semesters of college-level Chinese, emphasizes the link between inside classroom study and outside language use. All students live with Chinese roommates and abide by a full-time language pledge. This program is an excellent way to "warm up" for the longer spring term that follows.
Curriculum During the four-week Janterm, students take 25 hours per week of intensive and integrated Chinese language classes. All classes--grammar, drill, reading, etc.--revolve around a weekly theme, such as Chinese holiday customs or Chinese political reform. Practica assignments and field trips outside the classroom to places like parks, temples and offices enhance these weekly themes and give students the chance to practice their new language skills in a real-life setting. Students live with Chinese roommates who also play a part in the program's mini-lecture series, where they present on topics and lead discussions amongst CET students and peers.
This program is designed to serve as a springboard to a spring program. Most students apply for a combination of January Term plus spring program in Beijing, Harbin, Kunming, Hangzhou or Shanghai.
Housing, Meals and Chinese Roommates All January Term students live with Chinese roommates at the Beijing Institute of Education (BIE). Weekday lunches are included in the program fee.
